July

  • Use a summer lawn feed such as Westland Aftercut for a luscious green lawn. Use one with a built in weed killer if these are becoming a nuisance. Continue to mow weekly.
  • Trim flowering shrubs immediately after flowering finishes to promote new growth.
  • Pick sweet pea and rose flowers regularly to prolong the flowering season.
  • Remove dead flower heads from bedding plants, water daily and feed weekly with Miracle Gro or similar to promote fresh blooms.
  • All plants will be growing strongly now, so they will benefit from feeding with a high quality fertiliser such as Vitax Q4 or Phostrogen to keep them looking and producing at their best.
  • Check plants regularly for signs of pest’s or diseases and treat promptly to minimise damage and prevent problems spreading.
  • Harvest first early potatoes and other leafy vegetable plants regularly.
  • Continue to sow salad crops directly into the ground to ensure a steady supply of fresh greens for the table right up until autumn.
  • Keep an eye out for clematis wilt. A sudden wilting of the whole plant itself can identify this. Cutting the plant down almost to ground level and applying a fungicide such as fungus fighter can control it.
  • Move some conservatory plants outside like citrus and cymbidium orchids.
  • Watch out for algae and blanket weed in your pond. We have a range of products designed specially to help clear this, as well as food for your fish.
  • Now is a perfect time to re treat your fences and gates with plant friendly products like Cuprinol timber care.
