May

  • Continue sowing hardy annuals, and consider successional sowing, as the later they are sown the later they will flower.
  • Put support frames in place around herbaceous plants early enough for the plants to grow through.
  • Protect susceptible plants from slugs with copper rings, sharp grit or a natural slug pellet.
  • Check newly planted plants, and water as needed in warmer spells.
  • Plant out tender vegetables previously kept under glass, such as outdoor tomatoes, brassicas and squashes. Most other vegetable crops can be sown, but delay if the soil is cold and wet.
  • Plant main crop potatoes and earth up first earlies.
  • Weed regularly between vegetable crops and ornamentals to keep control.
  • Mow lawns regularly, once a week if needed, as little and often is best for the grass.
  • Depending on the weather, plant summer bedding in beds, pots troughs and hanging baskets, but remember to keep an eye out for a late frost!
  • Continue to feed Shrubs and Herbaceous beds with liquid fertilizers like Miracle Gro.
  • Watch out for lily beetle in pots and borders. We have a comprehensive range of products to control pests and diseases.
  • With the warmer weather on the way now is the time to consider the options for watering your garden. Why not consider installing an irrigation system. We can offer expert advice on how to do this.
  • Check your hosepipes and connecters are working efficiently.
