Forest Lodge Garden Centre for great value and garden inspiration

January

  • Dig over vegetable patches, incorporating plenty of organic matter such as Farmyard Manure to enrich the soil.
  • Protect plants from frost with horticultural fleece.
  • Consider putting down sheets of polythene over sections of your vegetable beds to start warming the soil.
  • Check pots and containers occasionally as they may require watering in milder conditions.
  • You can plant container grown hardy plants when the ground is not too wet or frozen.
  • Check stored root vegetables and bulbs, and throw out any that are rotting.
  • Check plants in greenhouses regularly for pests and disease and treat with an appropriate insecticide or fungicide as necessary. Ventilate cold greenhouses on mild days.
  • In extreme weather keep an area of the pond free of ice using a pond heater to allow fish to breathe, remove snow from evergreens and try not to walk on frosty lawns.
  • Don’t forget you can recycle your real Christmas tree at Forest Lodge and receive a voucher to spend in store.
  • Repair lawn edges and consider what you need to restore your lawn to a lush green in summer by purchasing your lawn care products now.
  • Prune apple and pear trees if the weather is mild.
  • Consider protecting fruit tree buds from frost and spraying to prevent peach leaf curl.
